The Wolf Breaks New Ground

Cumulus' 99.5 The Wolf/Dallas and SCA Promotions has partnered to run the first ever $1 Million Twitter Song of the Day Contest.

To qualify, listeners must tune in to The Wolf between 8/31/09 and 9/4/09 and listen for the Twitter Song of the Day. After registering on Twitter and following The Wolf at http://twitter.com/995theWolfDFW
, listeners must tweet the appropriate response after hearing the daily Song of the Day.

Each day, The Wolf will award concert tickets to ten contestants. At the end of the Song of the Day contest, one grand prize finalist will be selected to play for $1 million. To become an instant millionaire, the grand prize finalist must correctly predict the final score of the Dallas – New York professional football game on September 20.

The million dollar prize is being covered by SCA Promotions. If the grand prize finalist predicts the final score of the game, SCA will give The Wolf the money to award the winner.

Combining radio with real-time social media is a great fit. So far the station has just over 1,000 followers. They really should be following their listeners back. (as of this morning they are following only a small percentage of those followers) Social media is all about two-way communication...not just "broadcasting". It will be interesting to see how that number grows and how they interact with those followers beyond the contest. Jaye, what percentage of their weekly cume audience do you think they will convert to Twitter followers? We'll all know within a few weeks by watching their Twitter account.

Simply put, it just makes sense. I always wonder why some people call social networking self indulgent, when it's clearly communication and promotion. Now, with forward thinking programmers, we're able to award P1's and clearly define our Core/Cume by habits in their everyday lives. How is that different than pushing a phone number every second break?

It is a great new way to connect...but it's not perfect either...Twitter is running about 8 minutes behind for me today and yesterday, after the Gmail meltdown. So that means I post a tweet and it takes 8 minutes for it to show up on everyone else's screen.

The key is do what you have to do to get and keep listeners tuned to your station.Using twitter is a great tool to keep the listeners interest, use radio to communicate.

I gave away a lame prize from the bottom of our prize barrel in a contest to get our 500th follower. We had about a dozen new followers in less than 2 min!

Is twitter mainstream enough yet? If I talk to ten people, only five have actually heard of it, and maybe two are actually members of the service.

On the other hand, it seems everyone is on Facebook. Wonder why they didn't go that way?

I signed up to follow the station and indeed, they started the contest yesterday. It turns out, they don’t actually tell you the song of the day on twitter, they tell you when to listen to the station to hear it. A good, old fashioned ratings promotion, with a minor twist.

Instead of forcing me to listen at 10:10am everyday, I’d rather see the station use twitter to give listeners what they really want – a way to stay in touch with the station and participate, even if they aren’t listening at the correct moment in time. Tweeting the name of the song would do that. Or even better, use one of those fun tools to actually tweet the song. Like blip.fm – stations can build their own channel on blip, and share the music on twitter and other sites.

This is a good illustration of the dangers of using an online platform that you’re not familiar with. The station started tweeting on August 24. They probably put an intern in charge of the tweets. They have about a thousand followers so far, but they’re not even returning the follow to ten percent of them. (If you want to keep them, you should return the follow to your listeners..) Twitter is a social tool for building a relationship with your listeners and connecting with your community. A social tool. Even a branding tool. But a way to get listeners to jump through timed hoops, not so much…
