Opening Your Promotional Tool Kit

An Example Of Each Implement:
  • Build awareness.  Million dollar cash grab.
  • Force listening.  $1,000 song of the day.
  • Create sampling.  Premiums:  t shirts, stickers, refer magnets.
  • Packaging.  Thousand song weekend, lunchtime requests.
  • Loyalty/regularity.  Points program.
  • Coupon/Discounts.  Commercial free Monday, at work kickoff.
Before employing these tactics, always ask yourself what your competition will do to top it.

Be prepared for that response and decide if you will have to top IT as well as how and when you'll do so.

Rock 101 And Corus Are Right, But I Still Don't Think I Am Wrong

Three cheers to Corus Entertainment's Classic Rock 101/Vancouver for banning the prize pig who was found selling his winnings on Craigslist.

I agree: that's a lot more than one step too far.

The 50-something “North Van Brad,” as some listeners have dubbed him, has prolifically competed in dial-in competitions across the Lower Mainland for the past three decades.

Reselling contest tickets are against most radio contest rules, but Williams — who insists he’s innocent — claims he’s being singled out for winning 500 times too much.

“You can only imagine how often I was in their (station) tower,” he jokes.

“I don’t really do it for financial gain,” said Williams, who works at home for his wife’s legal research firm. “I do it because I like to go to the concerts, the nice restaurants. I’ve won some trips. I’ve won some cash. I’ve won just about everything short of a house.”

I know the radio promotion people and our air personalities generally prefer to limit folks like Brad to "you can only win once per month" or similar limitations, but in spite of this excess, I still feel that's a mistake.

They are heavy radio users and, like Brad, if they can't win from you, they'll quickly go to another station. If that's the week they happen to have a diary .. or even worse if this is the year (or two!) that their household happens to have a meter (or many of them!) .. you lose.

Radio contests are about making it fun and rewarding to listen. Smart stations make it easier and simpler for the kind of folks who love to play radio games and contests + participate in radio research to win more often.

North Van Brad hasn't convinced me I am wrong about THAT.

Take the limitations off your contest rules, but you might want to lurk on Craigslist now and then as well as being sure that your prize rules prohibit reselling prizes.

Get Mooned By A Bovine

Did I post anything back in September when CJJR, Vancouver, did "Triple Your Pay" last fall? NOOOO, but heck they didn't have a cool graphic like this for that contest! (although it did really move the needle for them, judging from the Fall '07 BBM).

I just received the promo email from Clay St. Thomas & Karen Daniels of The JRfm Waking Crew:

Moolah the JRfm Cash Cow will return Monday morning (January 28) and she’s bringing a ton of cash and a milk pail full of Rascal Flatts tickets. Just listen for your cue to call 604-280-9370 and win big cash. Everyone who plays wins a pair of tickets to the nearly sold out Rascal Flatts concert, and these are great tickets!

You'll have a chance to play two times per day, Monday to Friday. But as an Online Insider Member you will get advance notice of the times when the JRfm Cash Cow contest is played. Watch your email later this week for the JRfm Cash Cow schedule.

MegaPrize, More Than The Culmination Of A Great Book Promotion

Last night in Barrie-Orillia-Midland and tonight in Kichener-Waterlook-Cambridge-Guelph, the Larche stations reward their listeners for their loyalty with a great show and some amazing prizes, presented with lots of fun and show biz.

If you're ever near Casino Rama during KICX Megaprize week, I strongly urge you to attend and see how loyalty is built, one person at a time, by creating powerful entertainment experiences!

I Only Have Two Complaints On This Clear Channel Contest

Here's the promo, heard in Washington, D.C.: The Money is in the Music -- with the WMZQ $1000 Cash Song Of The Day. Listen weekday mornings at 7:35 for the song of the day to play -- then be caller nine and you win $1000 for your workday or $5000 on Thursday. And we really, really want you to win -- so you've got an extra chance to enter online. Check our web site for a calendar of songs to listen for.

1. Could "we" please ban plural pronouns from all stationality? The words "us" and "we" offer one more opportunity to brand your product.

2, If you really, really, really, really want to get more people to participate, why not make more specific listening appointments than just one per day at 7:35 and tell me exactly when you'll play the song on the web-based music calendar, or even better on the air right now so I don't have to do anything but LISTEN?

OK, I am feeling better now, thank you.

A Brief History Of Multiplying Paychecks

Emmis' KZLA, to my knowledge, was the first to do it under the name "Double Your Weekly Salary" and thus they are the ones trying to protect their first use of the concept.

KUPL, Portland, and KMPS, Seattle did it next (in the early 2000's) and continue to do it at least several times a year as "Double Your Paycheck." Then, a couple years later, San Diego's KSON (more than) jumped in followed by WKIS, Miami and Atlanta's Eagle.

Now, in Vancouver, JR-FM kicks it up a notch with the start of the fall book!

Contest Rules For EVERYTHING, Ya Gotta Have Them

... and, as Clear Channel just found, you can't enforce rules which viewers and listeners have not seen. (FCC says Clear Channel station botched "Win a Hot Rod for Dad" contest)

Yes, it is a hassle to write contest rules for everything and be sure they are readily available to the public, but it's an even bigger hassle to have to pay a $4,000 fine, which from the FCC's perspective is "going easy" on the station.
